Yaxham Light Railway is advertised as "not open to the public".....uh-oh....
That would make it quite difficult for Sam to bag as part of the challenge....
So we emailed Colin at YLR thus:
"Good morning,
Me and my five-year-old son have set ourselves a "Top Gear"-type challenge for 2009. We aim to ride on every railway in Norfolk within six months, starting from April.
We've noticed that your railway is not open to the public but can be booked by groups....obviously as there are only two of us we're not a group!
I am wondering if it would be possible for us to join in with another group you have booked in, sometime between April and September, or whether we could sneak onto a test run one day? We'd be prepared to pay of course!
Thanks for reading this and we look forward to hearing from you!
Regards,
Simon (41) and Sam (5)"
And, wonderfully, Colin replied thus:
"Dear Simon,
We would be happy to help you and your son, with your challenge. We have a number of provisional bookings for this season, but dates are still to be confirmed.
However we are there most Saturday's, so could arrange a private visit.
You may wish to combine your visit with ride on the MNR, which stops at Yaxham Station adjacent to our railway.
Please let us know?
Regards
Colin Newman
Yaxham Light Railway"
Thanks Colin, and thanks Yaxham Light Railway!

Banner
The Banner….

With April just around the corner, Sam and me are champing at the bit to make a flying start to our Excellent Train Adventure, which is to ride on every railway in Norfolk within six months. Can we do it? Yes we can!
We spent some of Saturday morning making our Official Adventure Banner, and Sam really enjoyed making the lettering as snazzy as he could. I pencilled in some of the words for him as a guide, others he drew himself. And note the perfect, reversed “N” in “train”, which I love. I’ll be taping the parts of the banner together today….we’re not laminating it at all. I kind of hope that it will suffer wear and tear, rain-damage, etc through the summer, and we’ll end up with a battered souvenir for Sam’s memory box. Look out for us posing with it as we hobo our way around Norfolk.
Also today I’ll be writing a few letters to send to a couple of the more difficult railways to gain access to, and also to Sam’s preferred choice of celebrity figurehead for the challenge.
